Where we stayed...

When you decide, months in advance, on a region and a place to go, a house to rent for family holidays, using Internet, you are always a bit anxious to find the “reality”. Once again we were far from disappointed.

Once more we had chosen Italy. We were especially curious to see the “Cinque Terre”, part of the Italian Riviera in the Liguria region. The house was on the top of a hill, close to the little town Sarzana (also known to be the place of Napoleon’s ancestors).

We had some wonderful views of the landscape and the coastline.

As I usually do, I include some maps to situate the place and the region. I will come back to the different “red spots” we visited during our stay.

The swimming pool was of course a major distraction, especially for the grand-kids, but being near the coast, we also wanted some real bathing. The coast line is quite rocky, but near the town of Lerici, e.g. close to Fiascherino, there are some nice little sand beaches, better adapted for the grand-kids.

Lerici is known for its 12th century castle… and for being the place where the poet Shelley drowned. The Golfo di Lerici is also known as the Golfo dei Poeti, linked to Shelley and Lord Byron.

A few days the sea was too rough for relaxed – and safe – bathing…

… but other days were perfect!

We have stayed in Vernazza twice, before and after the flood. It is a spectacular destination.

Hello Peter. You certainly chose a fabulous area to have your holiday. I have been to Liguria before and absolutely love it. We were in the opposite direction...the other side of Genoa . We went as far as Portoveno. Absolutely stunning. Thanks for another great post.
