The 15th of each month is the day for the mid-month theme – “subways”, which I share with bloggers in NYC and Stockholm. There is now no restriction concerning any more specific subject – the post must just relate to anything concerning “subways”.

Today’s post will be about the subway station “Bir-Hakeim”. It’s a station on Métro line no. 6, but actually this is one of the Paris Métro stations which are not underground. Some lines are actually partly “overground”, using elevated viaducts and this is one of them. For this reason, the trains on this line are nowadays equipped with tyres rather than with regular steel wheels in order to make them less noisy when they proceed in between inhabited buildings.
This line crosses also the Seine on a bridge. I have already made a post about the Bir-Hakeim Bridge. The Bir-Haikem station is situated at one end of the bridge and is actually the station which is the closest to the Eiffel Tower. It was opened in 1906 together with the bridge. The bridge and the station were renamed after WW II to commemorate the battle of Bir-Hakeim (in Libya 1942-43).
The reason why I now wish to talk about this station is that some important restoration work is just (almost) finished. The station has got all modern facilities and looks as new, but fortunately the original structure and decorations have been saved.
