Mid-month theme - subways. Métro station Bir-Hakeim.

The 15th of each month is the day for the mid-month theme – “subways”, which I share with bloggers in NYC and Stockholm. There is now no restriction concerning any more specific subject – the post must just relate to anything concerning “subways”.

You can find today’s posts – and some other subway related posts – by using the following links:

(As I recently have changed blog, you can find my older subway posts under the following link: PHO.)

Today’s post will be about the subway station “Bir-Hakeim”. It’s a station on Métro line no. 6, but actually this is one of the Paris Métro stations which are not underground. Some lines are actually partly “overground”, using elevated viaducts and this is one of them. For this reason, the trains on this line are nowadays equipped with tyres rather than with regular steel wheels in order to make them less noisy when they proceed in between inhabited buildings.

This line crosses also the Seine on a bridge. I have already made a post about the Bir-Hakeim Bridge. The Bir-Haikem station is situated at one end of the bridge and is actually the station which is the closest to the Eiffel Tower. It was opened in 1906 together with the bridge. The bridge and the station were renamed after WW II to commemorate the battle of Bir-Hakeim (in Libya 1942-43).

The reason why I now wish to talk about this station is that some important restoration work is just (almost) finished. The station has got all modern facilities and looks as new, but fortunately the original structure and decorations have been saved.

You can find some of these picture on my photo-blog.

Same same Peter...we have underground & 'over the ground' so to speak :)

Love subways in most major cities because not just the ride, it is observing the people onboard that intrigues me :)

Yes, I have been to this station !! I have checked many times those links on subways and was awed by the photos.

Thanks again for sharing.

Bises

Very modern photographs. Of steel and structures and things we all take for granted. Nice work, Peter.

I am always very happy to see restoration work, especially in Paris! Very good post.

Used to live not far from the Bir-Hakeim station but "in my souvenir" it was not as pleasant as the picture is suggesting and I wonder why...

I like the blue glass canopy in the first photo! I rather like travelling on the subway. There is a large subway system in Toronto, but I don't ride it very often. When I go to the city, I usually go by car.

You are right! Look at (and sometimes listen to) people is part of the show!

I believe maybe you visited the Eiffel Tower?

I wish you the same!

hpy:
Tu trouves?

delphinium (fatiguée):
Tu as raison pour Gènes. C'est impressionnant. Je vais repasser cet été. Bises!

... especially in Paris? That's nice of you!

Maybe thanks to the recent restoration? ... or maybe you lived so close that you were disturbed?

ex-shammickite:
You should use the municipal transport system! (Leave the car whenever possible.)

Our Paris underground is nicer when it is in open air "en aérien".

Awesome photos! I love taking the train across the bridge over River Seine at night and seeing the Eiffel Tower. It was soooo beautiful.
