Spanish vacations - Granada with Alhambra

More from our Spanish vacations - Granada with Alhambra at the foothill of Sierra Nevada.

The place became really what you would call Spanish in 1492 - the year Columbus made his discoveries - after having been Ibero-Celtic, Greek and Roman and for more than 700 years having been occupied by the Moors.

The typical Spanish-muslim art is of course especially visible at Alhambra with Gerealife, most of it dating fom the 13th and 14th centuries.

The remarkable cathedral was built over a previous mosque during the 16th century in renaissance style. In the Royal Chapel, the Catholic Monarchs - Queen Isabella I of Castille (1451-1504) and King Ferdinand II of Aragaon (1452-1516) are buried.

The music is - of course - "Recuerdos de Alhambra", once more with Andres Segovia at the guitar.

Your presentation is such a delight, Peter. Presuming you don't have Spanish in your arsenal of languages, did you find communication much of an issue during your Spanish sojourn?

Some of those flower-pots on walls shots make me want to redesign my own little courtyard ...

OH my. You know how I love Paris but this is tempting!
The church with the amazing ceiling? I'd love to know more about that. The reflections in the pool caught my eye as well. The music is a perfect accompaniment to your wonderful photos Peter!

Thank you those photos of Alhambra! I have been there about 30 years ago, but unfortunately we lost our camera with photos of Alhambra. I hope, I have this time a better luck.
But if not, I can always come here and see your photos :)

I love the Alhambra - just an amazing place, such beautiful tiles and such calm space. Do you have more photos of it to share?

Loving your Andalusia photos. We did the trip of Granada, Cordoba and Seville a few years ago and just loved it.

Hi Peter & welcome back to your blog. love the pics again. Delighted you had such a good time. From where you were, all the way along the Med Coast to Italy, is my favourite part of the world. Oh to spend more time there.

You should try and check out the book 'Driving over lemons' by Chris Stewart. Chris lives in the Alpujarra hills that make up the southern foothills of the Sierra Nevada, south of Granada, and was the original drummer of the band 'Genesis' in 1967.

Interesting. Some of the architecture is quite like what we see in Mughal Ruler's buildings here. specially the one in red sandstone!

The oranges are tempting :)
