PARIS METRO – MOCKOBCKOE METPO

The Paris metro line 14, the most recent one, opened as late as 1998 and the stations are of a very different design compared to the more traditional ones, considering that most of them date from 1900 and a few years after that.

In one of the line 14 stations,“Madeleine”, there is a wall decoration offered by the Moscow Metro in 2008. It tells the story of “Ryaba, the hen” and a golden egg.

As an exchange, the Paris Metro offered a copy of its specific Guimard (see previous posts here and here) designed metro entrances to Moscow. (I stole this picture from here.)

The Moscow metro is more recent than the Paris one, the oldest lines date from 1935. Some stations are fabulously decorated. I took a number of photos from some of the Moscow stations during my visit there last September…

… as well as of the Saint Basil’s Cathedral, which somehow is represented in the Moscow wall decoration.

Superbe collaboration! Rien d'ennuyeux dans le metro.
Good timing for the post too.

Et bientôt, le prolongement de la ligne 14 jusqu'à Arbatskaia ?

OMG! It's like visiting a museum taking a ride in the metro.

Helsinki metro is so colorless and plain compared to these.

My goodness, the Moscow metro looks like an underground palace! What a fun contrast the funky and colourful Parisian metro makes!

The Paris Metro system is definitely missing a bust of Lenin.

A curiosity of the Madeleine Metro station is the fact that it always smells bad. Any idea why?

Il faut donc aller à Paris et prendre le métro pour se croire en URSS? (Pas en Russie, à cause du marteau etc...)

Hi, I am from Moscow, every day I take the subway, there is always a lot of people, and poor ventilation, and still need to be careful not to steal a purse, only foreigners can appreciate how beautiful Moscow subway

Do the metro stations in Moscow qualify as the most elaborate metro stations in the world? Though beautiful, I would still rather be in PARIS!

Hi Peter, just stopping by on the blog metro through the cyber underground, via Moscow, Vladivostok, the Tokyo Express, the 310 to Yuma, and back via Rio and Jo-burg... these cyber lines really get around. Great to see Moscow's underground. And St Basil's. Was there when I was ten...

Also, really liked your preceeding piece on the Dog Cemetery, which I've been to a few times, and have done seven blog posts about, which you can find all grouped together here:

Looks like we were both taken with some of the same monuments... always a pleasure to see what you are up to in your wanderings and musings. Take care, see you soon I hope. Am back to work again now, so am a bit busy, but we will find a time that works...

Hi Peter, should enter the Moscow subway with hat & gloves!
What about that story of “Ryaba, the hen” and a golden egg? Where is it to be found?

We walk everywhere by foot when in Paris in order not to miss anything but clearly we have missed this interesting metro station - an inspirational collaboration!

oh! nice pictures here Peter.
i like the detailed metro station inside Moscu, very old and classic compared from the usual metro stations we have. ^0^
that was one of my fave,
what station was that anyway?

when we were in Paris, we haven't tried the metro actually, it's all walk. ^0^
only once on the way to the hotel, and we both got lost on our 1st day.
hope you can post more moscu travels.
