Street Art ... again

There are a lot of Street Art (see previous posts) activities going on at present. The Street Artists get more and more support from the City, from galleries…

One City sponsored (4th arrondissement) event was the spectacular enormous self-portrait (world's largest?) by “Jef Aerosol”, covering one of the blind house facades at Place Igor Stravinsky - with its moving statues by Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely (see previous post) - close to Beaubourg (Centre Pompidou – see previous post) and the Saint Merry Church (see previous post). I passed by when the work was in preparation and Jef was escalating the scaffolding and got interviewed by different media…
… and I returned last Saturday to watch the official inauguration. If weather and taggers permit, this will remain here at least until 2014. The gesture is “chuuuuttt!!” (shh! Hush!), meaning a suggestion, perhaps not really to silence, but rather to a respect of the environing art, music centre, church…
While waiting for the official inauguration ceremony, we had the nice surprise to listen to an improvised concert by a girl’s choir, “Cantus” from Latvia. The girls had the preceding days been singing at Notre Dame, the Madeleine Church and Versailles and were on their way to Belgium for other concerts. The choir leader received a signed gift by Jef.

Another City sponsored event (17th arrondissement) took place last Thursday, just in front of the local Town Hall. “Mosko et associés”, “Mesnager” and “Artiste Ouvrier”, peformed together for a common work, which later was brought into the Town Hall, where they expose until July 9, together with “Le Cyclop”, who in the meantime seriously improved the look of some street poles (and "Mesnager" decorated a tree).
Some pictures from the indoor exposition.

Hey Peter, see you've been out and about Paris again... nothing escapes your ever vigilant eye and camera. When art is executed by true artists, I think it is great to get it out of the museums and galleries and onto more unusual surfaces, where it can light up the lives of passersby... good to know the city is playing an active role promoting such artivity... and good that you are there to document it for us... thanks et à bientôt

Qu'est-ce que j'aime cette vie qui foisonne et qui fait remuer bien des artistes!
Quelle chance tu as donc eu de voir tout cela aux premières loges.

Street art is the best... it's accessible to everyone, not just academics and supposed connoisseurs.
Awesome post.

Have a great day!

Street Art is fascinating, it's art in just the right place, among people.

Peter, what a fabulous post! I love the street art. Jef's super-large self portrait is so good! The entire event seems so happy and "loving" [can't think how else to describe it] How wonderful of Paris to support these endeavors. And how good of you to report them.

This is an excellent blog, so interesting, beautiful artwork, photos, so that it makes it enjoyable to be able to see it without being there...I always look forward to your well thought out and well planned tours of Paris through photos...

Peter:

Every nook and corner of Paris speaks of a certain vibrant pulse and bright colors of this legendary 'city of light' a name befitting its reputation. and Peter you seem to capture that wonderful energy on film.

C'est magnifique et magique.
Merci Joanny!

What a perfect subject and message for this place and I look forward to seeing it on my next visit. Your coverage of the inauguration was almost as good as being there!

I will miss being in Paris for La Fête tomorrow but know that you will be out and about to report with your photos...

Such fun and so creative! I remember that plaza well as I visited St. Merry (Merri?) which I found lovely! I wonder how long these will stay in place?

Dans le street art il y a sûrement des oeuvres qui sont belles, pour certaines autres, j'ai du mal à adhérer.
J'aime bien ces jolies jeunes filles qui chantent superbement bien.

Paris really celebrates Street Art and the artists.... I like that! A new way of expressing whatever the artist wants to express.... and it reaches out to so many people. Of course, there are always the people wo disapprove, but on the whole, I think most people enjoy Street Art, when it's proberly manages, and not simply rude words scrawled on blank walls!
