Meeting bloggers at Menton

Together with Nathalie (Avignon in Photos), Richard (Neue Zürcher Blog) and Stuart (“Chuckeroon” –Richmond upon Thames Daily Photo) , we had the privilege to meet for a long weekend at one of the nicest places in France (on the globe?), Menton, and to be welcomed by Jilly (Menton Daily Photo), who is fortunate enough to live there.

Jilly had organised our visit in the most wonderful way. We visited not only Menton, but she took us also to some other close-by places like Roquebrune, Gorbio and Monaco – Monte Carlo.

Below you will find some illustrations which hopefully well reflect what a nice time we had. We didn’t talk only photography! One of our lunches we had on the charming terrace of Jilly’s house, overlooking the fantastic landscape with the Mediterranean in the background.

I will be back with some (shorter) posts about our weekend, but will today start with some impressions from Menton, very close to the Italian border and after different reigns (including the Monaco Grimaldi family) part of France since 1860 (with some short interludes during the more recent wars).

The old city is perhaps the most charming part of the place (see also the top photo)...
... with a cemetery at the top of the hill, offering spectacular views in all directions, but...
... we must not forget that the city of course developed to tourism during the 19th century with some impressive palaces, a casino...
... and of course not the water front!
I made this post a bit earlier than my "normal" Wednesday posts. I will again be quite busy the coming days... and please accept my appologies for not having time to visit your posts the way I normally like to do it.
... and if you wonder: The moon on the night shot from Menton is not quite at its place. It's a seperate photo.
You can find some of my Menton photos also on Ipernity.

I been there two years ago, a beautiful place, especially Menton.

Nice week!

I've always thought of the French riveria as a great place to visit, but somewhere I would never choose to live, but your photos make it look very tempting. I think the first photo looks like something out of a Jacques Tati film rather!

I'm sure you all had a wonderful break there - with better weather than most of us had elsewhere!

Mélisse said...

What a beautiful spot to spend some time with friends and with your camera! And how nice to get away from your regular routine and spend some time in a completely different environment.
It's a long weekend here in Canada.... we are celebrating Queen Victoria's birthday... but I will not be going anywhere. Just into my garden I expect.

Leena said...

I am happy for you all - meeting and beautifully interesting environment!
My trip was also interesting and fine, but I got a flu after a trip - fortunately after :)
Also in Joensuu bird cherries are almost flowering!

Great and comprehensive collection of memories Peter. Particularly like the first one. Now I know why my feet felt so tired on Monday. Menton really is a jewel, especially when combined with the hinterland, which of course includes the delightful Pension Milou!

Super post Peter ! A bientôt, j'espère !

Peter, what a feast of images of the weekend we all spent together. I know I will return again and again to this post to enjoy each marvellous memories. It was such a wonderful pleasure to meet you and spend time with you and all the others. All I can say is 'come back soon!' It's quiet around here now everyone has gone...

Cergie said...

Den forsta bilden ar just perfect.

Also, I'm glad that you and the rest of them had a wonderful time!

The first big photo is so charming; it reminds me of Spitzweg's paintings. And one can see that your meeting was very joyful and nice. And at such a wonderful place! Who wouldn't want to live there?

Nancy said...

What an opportunity to have Jilly as a tour guide! I adore Menton and hope to retire there part time some day.

You are so gifed! Thanks for all you've posted; it's a lot of work and we appreciate it very much.

Warm regards,

Peter,
Well I feel like I was right there. Your photos are marvelous and how lucky to have been to Jilly's home. I have talked with her several times but hope to meet her in person one day as well.

I'm LOL at Stuart, the two fisted photographer! Can he shoot with both at the same time? :)

Like Jilly, I might drop in again to take a longer look. So many photos, so little time. It's almost time to pack!

alice said...

Chuckeroon said...
