Gardens around Grand and Petit Palais

Around the Grand Palais and the Petit Palais (see two previous posts) there are some nice gardens. Most people would just walk down (or up) the Champs Elysées on their way between the Arch of Triumph and Place de la Concorde. This is also what you can see here on pictures taken last Friday, the only nice spring day we have had recently (see how people are dressed).

If you have the time I would however recommend some zigzagging. The gardens are nice; there is even a small hidden “Swiss valley”. You can relax on a park bench, have a coffee…

Behind the park are some embassies (GB, US…) and the Elysées Palace. You can see the garden entrance to the palace here.

You can also find Espace Cardin (with theatre, cinema, exhibitions…), Théatre Marigny with origins from the 19th century and where Offenbach was a “star” and where still some of our top actors perform and finally the Théatre-du-Rond-Point, which originally (around 1850) was built as a “panorama” theatre (you can still read “PANORAMA” over the old entrance). Before the cinema, the “panoramas” (360 degrees pictures and scenes) were very popular. From 1894 to 1980 this was an ice palace, but since transformed to one of our leading theatres.
If you are hungry – and can afford it, you can also find some of Paris’ best restaurants here: Ledoyen (3 Michelin “macaroons”) , Laurent, Lenôtre. There are a number of fountains and statues around. Do you recognize these personalities?
You can find some of these pictures on my photo-blog.

No problem; you can probably find the answers later in the comments!

glenn:
Excuses accepted!

alice:

Tu as déjà vu un schtroumpf gris?

This is a nice post, Peter. I think this is DeGaulle, Churchill and not sure about the other one. I probably spelling the names wrong too.

Was glad to see you at my place.

Thanks.

Yo Peter...they disrupted the olympic torch again ya in San Francisco ;(

I, too, recognize the two figures on the left, but who is on the right? Perhaps you can help me fill in a gap of my history?! The gate is spectacular, of course!! Re. your forthcoming summer in Tuscany; so very green with envy!! I know that you will have so much fun with your family. Take lots of photos, please!! That is a definite request!!

Hi Peter..
Paris has lots of stature rite! The left one is definitely Sir Winston Churchil..you could guess from the body built:) especially at the back of the park is GBR's embassy...

Love all the pics, they look beautiful.

Each year, during the Jour du Patrimoine (when the state buildings are open to the public) I would try and visit the Elysées Palace. And each year I would arrive there to a crowd several blocks long...So I never did see the inside...did you?

As for the statues - we all agree on Churchill and de Gaulle - but who's on the right? It looks like a WWI uniform, though...

Lovely to revisit my old stomping grounds!

Quels merveilleux jardins?

delphinium:
Yes, I can confirm Churchill, de Gaulle and Clemenceau!

claude:
22 avril, c'est noté!

oldmanlincoln:
Clemenceau is the third one, as confirmed to Delphinium!

hpy:

shionge:
Yes, the flame parades are not very successful until now (understatement)!

kate:
Pleas find the confirmation above! Yes, I will certainly bring something back from Tuscany ... although I thought to limit the pure sightseeing (already done)!

noushy:
As you can see above, the answers are given!

pijah:
So nice to see you here! (The weather is still not the best!)

mathilde:
A bientôt!
