Place de la Nation

I have the intention to show you some small more “secret” sites in the neighbourhood of Place de la Nation, but first I thought I must say something about the place itself.

The place was originally called the “Place du Trône” (the Throne Square), as a throne was temporarily placed here to welcome the newly wedded King Louis XIV and Queen Marie Thérèse on their arrival in Paris 1660. During the Revolution the place got the name “Place du Trône-Renversé” (the Overthrown Throne Square). The present name was given in 1880 on the occasion of the first 14th July (National Day) celebration. In the middle of the place you have a statue, called the “Triumph of the Republic”, erected in 1889 (100 years after the Revolution) in plaster, and in bronze 10 years later. Place de la Nation has together with Place de la Bastille and Place de la République been part of a triangle where different political manifestations, mostly “left”, traditionally take place. The lady on the top of the statue (“Marianne” representing the Republic) looks symbolically in the direction of Place de la Bastille. The columns and two pavilions being part of the “Fermiers Généraux” (Tax Farmers) wall (built in order to collect taxes on food, beverages, building material etc. - see my post January 18) were erected just before the Revolution. The statues of King Philippe Auguste and Saint Louis (King Louis IX) on top of the columns were added later (1845).

The guillotines which came into frequent use during the Revolution were not placed only on the present Place de la Concorde (then, Place de la Révolution). Another guillotine, then also frequently used, was placed close to one of the above mentioned pavilions. You can now instead find a shop (“Damart”). Some of these pictures can be found on my photo-blog.

Oh, I like that bluea facade of yesterday!
Luckily we've had here sun and the temperature is over 10 degrees in the afternoon. Frost in the morning!

Bises

I love the way you describe Paris. It is looking beautiful after those wintery days.

May the tourism department look here and honour you for such commendable job !!

Such wonders in one city is hard to imagine. Very nice work, Peter.

Tks , Peter for your kind acceptance of my "postcard" from Richmond. Yes, you are right! We look at these photos and very often we know exactly where we are! Somehow it's obvious that we ar not in France, or wherever. BTW...another visit of bloggers! Don't wear yourself out with "vsitor services". However: what a pleasant way to enjoy company.

Bonjour Peter,

I just love the information you provide. Is it mostly in your head? I've learned so much from you.

Don't worry, Peter, nothing bad will happen to those chickens when they're grown, by our hands anyway. They are with us to kindly share their eggs, and for photographing.

Hi Peter!
I'm beleted, sorry Peter!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to YOU!

Thank you so much for your great frienship and for your wonderful Paris.
Keep your beautiful art job!

Best wishes from my mom too.

And I'd like to thanks Mona.
She always remember about her friends.
Beautiful poem
From Mona to you:

Shooting was his favorite game
Shooting with a camera
Moving around with dynamic skill
Talented to the core
A Consummate Virtuoso!

He had a whole world at his tips to offer
For all to see
A Treat Captured and laid
For us to feed our eyes upon
In wonderment and awe...

Of the world that God made
Peter made it possible for us to see
In our very homes
To feast upon the colors of Life...

Mostly I know very little when I start a post. I try to learn while making it! Despite many years in Paris, it's only recently that I have found the time to really visit.

(I'm happy for you chicks! I was almost sure about the answer!)

krystyna:
Thanks to you and your mother for your kind wishes!

Very good that you brought the attention to Mona's post!!! I mentioned it and thanked her as wekk as I could yesterday, but she is a remarkable person and what she does on her blog is also remarkable!
